The Question:

My daughter does not eat red meat. She seems pale and tired to often. She works out often. Could she be short on iron and what is a good source other than red meat and spinich?

The Answer:

Your daughter may have an iron deficiency but it is hard to tell without a blood test. Anemia can be quite common in women who exercise extremely hard and don't take in enough calories. Try to tactfully let your daughter know that you are concerned and see if she also feels a little less energetic than usual. If so, suggest a visit to a doctor. Eating red meat is probably the best way to bring in a quality and highly absorptive iron source. All dark green leafy vegetables will have good levels of iron but like you mentioned, spinach probably has the most! Don't forget about supplementation. If your daughter is deficient in iron her doctor will probably recommend an iron supplement in addition to eating foods that are higher in iron.
