The Question:Have you heard of a new product that is a creatine serum? It is a liquid that is almost instantly absorbed by the muscles and none is gone to waste because it wasnt absorbed. The Answer:Creatine became very popular about 5 years ago. Since that time there have been numerous attempts at making creatine more absorbable and convenient to take. A few companies tried to make liquid creatine but they found that it didn’t work because creatine is unstable in a liquid environment after about 3-4 hours. Being unstable means that it gets broken down into a molecular structure that is no longer creatine!
Recently, I have seen a product similar to what you describe. The name escapes me at the moment. It comes in 3 different flavors (cherry, grape, orange) and it is not technically a liquid. It is, as you say, in a syrup or serum. I have not seen any quality research studies done on this product and whether or not it actually increases the absorption of the creatine. The one problem I can see with this type of product is simply the expense. It is roughly 2.5 times as expensive as pure creatine. Other companies have tried to increase the absorption affect of creatine by mixing it with a dextrose sugar. This will increase the absorption of creatine but again it becomes much more expensive than pure creatine.
Still, other companies have tried to increase the absorption of creatine by making something called effervescent creatine. This stuff fizzes up like Alka-Seltzer and it also includes a dextrose sugar to increase absorption. These types of products seem to be effective but again, they cost much more.
Since it is important to me to find any product that enhances performance I have done some research on these sugar/effervescent/creatine combinations. I spoke with a doctor from the Olympic training center and he said that you can get all the advantages of these new products without the cost by simply doing the following: Put a half cup of water in a glass and put in a microwave for 30 seconds. Once it is heated up place one teaspoon of pure creatine in the water and stir for 30 seconds. Then, add approximately 8 ounces of cold grape juice. Stir it up and drink it down. The hot water completely dissolves the creatine and the grape juice provides a sugar (carbohydrate) to help increase the storage of the creatine. Taking your creatine this way will reduce the cost dramatically and provide all the advantages of some of these newer products mentioned above.
